Perceptions of Jewellery

 

My Perception of Jewellery is that it has to be worn and attached to the body,but not necessarily that it has to be of limited materials like people often associate it mostly of gold,silver an diamonds.as it shows social status of wealth. i would wear this bangle as i find the colours interesting and if you were toput it on a table youd think its stappled prolypropylene. and its expensive because it ranges from 50 to 250 Pounds which in Rands would be costly.this jewellery is made by

My Final Piece

My final piece as we were inspired by the circus has a lot of detail and busy just like in the circus to give off the same feeling. I was interested by the acrobatics and that's where my inspiration came from. The design changed originally from what I had drawn but as you manufacture there's a lot of change that occurs. The project in its self did challenge me as to be careful of how I work and not be careless but the last few days before submission i was not as stressed as I saw the piece coming together as to stressing on how I was gonna assemble it .I'm  glad it eventually came to pass as a jeweller I've inquired certain skills.

The Design Process

Designing took me a whole week trying to figure out my final design. After I researched  on the internet about cannatile and filagree pieces I came across an interesting pieces of pearl settings and wire work.that is where i finally got inspired and gave me ideas to inspire my design.

Well for my reference what I liked and found interesting were the acrobatics,but what I liked was not only just how they can bend their bodies etc. It was the line formation and the negatives that formed many elements and patterns. So I played around tracing the outlines and thats where my design process developed from.

The headpiece of Nehia,queen of Zebudan.This headpiece(crown),helps her lure the men by the sparkling brass ball it shines from seashores and sailor boats.using her beautiful voice as well to accompany her crown as sher id forever doomed as queen undersea.

The Queen of Zebudan

                                                                                     

Nehia,born along the coastal land area. Raised in a palace by humble parents, the Queen and King of Zebudan,as princess but she had the power within her, that many men wished to have. Growing up she always overthrew and overshadowed boys and men. Which seemed to amaze A lot of people, so word spread in her town. Not long after that she got recruited to be in the army as one of the warriors with the men of Zebudan.

The princess as beautiful as she was a warrior without rival, and a successor over all the wars that the men appointed her as leader. One day sad news came to her as she was told her parents were murdered by the great powerful wizard many feared. So she grieves for her parents and is appointed Queen but her heart  was as cold as ice and she became ruthless. She then took her army and went to the woods to hunt for the Wizard. Now the Wizard knew of this and set a trap for her to get a hold of her immense famous strength,and she fell in a trap the wizard had set,a hole and it was too deep FOR her soldiers who tried to search and helped but it was pointless and days turned to a week,a week to weeks ,to months and eventually a year passed ,the people of Zebudan were saddened by these news.

Whilst the wizard had took a hold of her he cast a spell on and turned her into a possessed monster into eternal damnation under the sea. He a headpiece on her to lure the men to their deaths. Using her wonderful voice she sang to attract and hypnotize, them alongside her crown with the golden ball that shown from seashores and boats,and her this spell will last eternally. This is how the people of Zebudan lost their Queen and strongest warrior ever to live.

My inspiration of colour,was highly influenced by the designers I chose looking at their collections and the bright,beautiful, colourful pieces.So I thought as much as I don't have surety of how i would go on about the design and colour technique I'd go for.I experimented with perspex that I ball burred into and gave a nice rough texture and apply acrylic paint.I then moved to cold enamel cause I had initially started with kiln fired enamel which needed experience but was a fun experience.My final piece has glass beads that are colourful and same colour skim as my cold enameled leafs different moods of green and shades.Initially this project was a learning curve for me that sometimes you need to try lots of different stuff and see what will work and new techniques you develop,just by playing around.

I was melting and when i walked past I saw wax shavings they looked interesting. I then took some to  y bench to see what i could do the fluffiness looked nice and so as they colour.

I experimented colour also  using ceramics and painted on the clay pieces, glazed only fired  and painted.

I used cold enamelling after I had explored with kiln fired enamel.I found it was more convenient also easier and more neat since you are in control unlike kiln fired enamel that needs experience.

I experimented on perspex plastic as another interesting  way of  adding colour and I liked and thought the idea worked although at first I wasn't sure of it but I stuck a piece of printed flower on the back traced then burred into it,I then painted to see how it looked with the ball burred texture I found interesting.I plan to explore more and ball burr in deeper and play with colour. to use other shapes as well and try blend the paint more neatly.

My pieces that I'm going for are colour inspired.my first experiment was kiln fired enamel with these two pieces  above, Immediately when you think of adding colour in jewellery we always automatically think of enamel.I hope that I can find more colourful ways to explore in for my final design.

Shiela McDonald

Most of Shiela's work features enamel on silver,fine gold.colour is very important to her and has been a main focus of interest.as she loves drawing and painting especially in water colour.
Shiela originally studied Textile design at the Glasgow School of Art before being drawn to Jewellery Design with she graduated B.A 1st Class honours.
